In an interview with GamesRadar+, Kenta Motokura as producer of Donkey Kong Bananza gave a few interesting insights. He said that some of the ideas in Donkey Kong Bananza could actually be early clues for Nintendo’s next game.
Motokura also explained that Nintendo’s upcoming big game will follow the same pattern of development leaps as happened between Super Mario Odyssey and Donkey Kong Bananza.
This means that it is very likely that the next 3D Mario game will again take gameplay elements from its predecessor, but with a much wider and open world to explore.
If you pay attention, there is a fairly clear common thread between the two games. The transformation ability in Bananza, for example, is similar to the Cappy mechanism in Odyssey. Both of them continue the tradition of iconic Mario series abilities such as the Fire Flower and the Tanooki suit which have been around for a long time.
There are many possibilities regarding the next Nintendo game
Whether Nintendo will continue this character transformation concept in their next first-party game is still a question mark. However, it makes sense that the same development team behind Bananza and Odyssey wants to maintain the continuity of the playing style they have built.
Of course, there are various other possibilities that can be explored from Bananza. The appearance of young Pauline in the game, for example, could open up opportunities for various new projects featuring the Mayor of New Donk City as a central character, ranging from a sequel to Super Mario Odyssey, to a prequel that bridges the story between Bananza and Odyssey.
